Description of job:

About the position

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organic and Synthetic Supramolecular Chemistry. The project is focused on Reversible Self-assembled Monolayers (rSAMs), a pH-switchable version of classical SAMs allowing a reversible and ordered introduction of affinity reagents in a layered architecture. The 2-dimensional assemblies mimic the dynamic aspects of lipid bilayers but are simple to prepare, stimuli-responsive and feature fast on/off rates(Yeung, S.-Y. et al. ACS Central Science, 2017. 3, 1198-1207).  This opens up new exciting areas of research that we intend to address in the coming years.

The main objectives of the project are:

(1) To study rSAMs as a tunable fluidic biointerface for controlled cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation, potentially impacting current tissue engineering efforts

(2) To transfer rSAMs to nanoparticles for potent inhibitors of bacterial infection

(3) To assess templated ligand fixation as an approach to enhance lectin affinity or to modulate cell adhesion

The specific research tasks involve the design and synthesis of ligand decorated amidine amphiphiles, structural characterisation of corresponding rSAMs on 2D and 3D supports, affinity tests and their use as lipid bilayer mimics for bacterial pathogen inhibition and for controlled cell adhesion. We expect the researcher to actively participate in undergraduate supervision and teaching.

Required Qualifications and Criteria for Assessment of Applicants

Candidates must have demonstrated scientific competence corresponding to a doctoral degree in synthetic organic chemistry with special emphasis on supramolecular chemistry, glycochemistry, and regenerative medicine. Candidates with a proven track record demonstrating practical contributions directly related to the research topic of the position outlined above will be given preference. Moreover, the researcher must demonstrate documented pedagogical skills and the overall merits required for establishing an independent research program attracting external funding.
