Job vacancy (closed)

PhD student position in Biomedical Sciences: Diagnostic tools for oral infections

Starting date for applications: 15 Jun 2019
Closing date for applications: 30 Jun 2019
Location: Malmö, Sweden
Website: https://mau.se/en/about-us/job-offers/ (job ref: REK 2.2.1-2019/181)
Description of job:

About the Foresight research program

The research programme Foresight at Malmö University has as main aim to discover predictive biomarkers and develop diagnostic tools that can improve clinicians' ability to identify patients with increased risk of caries and periodontitis. With more efficient methods for risk assessment, healthcare costs can be reduced so that care is tailored to all individuals based on their needs. Rather than involving more research within a field of knowledge, researchers from different areas of knowledge work interdisciplinarily. The programme is coordinated by the Faculty of Odontology.

Tasks

The overall objective is to develop highly specific, low cost diagnostic assays, based on affinity interactions involving use of gold nanoparticles and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), for non-invasive and label-free detection of low concentrations of the biomarkers in experimental models, as well as in gingival biofluids. Detection systems to be used will involve capacitance measurements, surface plasmon resonance, nanoplasmonics and others.

The PhD-student is required to interact closely with dentists, chemists, physicists, and biologists, and to spend time in partner laboratories for clinical validation of the sensing/assay technologies developed in the project.

Required Qualifications and Criteria for Assessment of Applicants

The successful candidate will have a masters’ degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, preferably biochemistry nanotechnology or analytical chemistry. Experimental laboratory experience is required and candidates with interdisciplinary experience directly related to the research topic of the position outlined above, notably oral microbiology or infectious medicine will be given preference.
